With the onion price rocketeers across India, a brawl broke out in a restaurant at Kerala’s Kannur district after they refused to serve sliced onion along with beef fry. The Malabar restaurant near Taliparamba area has served cabbage slices instead of onion to a customer. It led to a verbal spat and later turned into a physical assault.
A complaint has been filed by P Sudeepan, the Kannur Sub-Jail Deputy Prison Officer, in Taliparamba Police Station on Tuesday.

Sudeepan was served beef fry along with cabbage slices instead of onion. When he inquired about it, the employees informed him that they served so as per the direction of the restaurant owner. As per the complaint, when Sudeepan tried to click photographs of the dish, the owner created rucks and he, along with other staff, dragged Sudeepan to the backyard of the restaurant and beaten up.
This is the first such incident from the state in relation with the soaring onion price. The hotel owner and others have been booked under Section 341, 323 of Indian Penal Code.
It is widely argued that the Centre has been doing nothing effectively to tackle the recurring issues created out of the soaring price of onion, which is the key component of the majority of food items. Restaurants are forced to either reduce the usage of onion or increase the price of dishes. The price of onions jumped from 20 to 100 within weeks.

Multiple reports of onion theft have also been reported from across the country. On Tuesday, hundreds gathered to buy onion when the former Jan Adhikar Party leader Pappu Yadav sold it at Rs. 35/kg in front of BJP office as a protest.
